Vintage 1970’s Persian faience. Faience is the world's oldest artificial substance – a non-clay based ceramic of quartz and sand used 5500 years ago in ancient Egypt. Each bead is made by hand. The bright blue color symbolizes the Nile.  Faience was often a substitute for lapis lazuli and turquoise.
